A few months ago, Thanda learners were asked to write letters to Mandela. There were no guidelines given really – just an open forum for children and youth to express how they felt. What resulted was a heartfelt outpouring of love and appreciation for a man they affectionately call “Tata Mandela.” They wrote of their understanding of the sacrifices he made and their deep gratitude for freedom. They told the story of a man who will never be lost, and they showed a story of hope for the future.
Local artist Clint Strydom brought these letters to life through photographs of the children themselves in a collection called Messages for Mandela. Their smiles portray a new Africa – a hopeful Africa – where children have pride in themselves and goals for the future. It is the Africa that we work to create every day.
The Messages for Mandela exhibit will be featured as part of KZNSA’s temporary collection from 28 October to 16 November 2014. In celebration of the exhibit’s new home at KZNSA, the organisations will be hosting a launch party at 6pm today, 28 October 2014.
Prints, posters, and desk calendars will be available for sale in the KZNSA gift shop throughout the exhibition. Messages for Mandela will subsequently be featured at Buzz Art, KZNSA’s pop-up shop from 18 November to 15 January.
