Since our inception in 2008, Thanda has created, experimented with and implemented a wide range of programmes and curricula, all aimed to develop game-changing skills in our community. With our series of White Papers, we take a step back, putting into words the philosophies that underlie our many initiatives. Each paper is a mediation on a topic central to who we are as an organization, as well as what we do and why we do it. While they can be read separately, every piece in the series is designed to speak towards and resonate with every other. By sharing these mediations with a larger audience, we hope to foster wider conversation around the big ideas we are all faced with in the modern world.

What can a kids’ book teach a room full of corporate executives? What can we all learn from a bear with a pointy red hat? Can you grow a full watermelon in 7 days? In On Wonder, we answer these questions and more by tapping into the power of stories, setting aside rigid concepts of academic rigour, and exploring ‘the space in between.’

What do we do when what we see with our own eyes doesn’t match what we are told to believe? How much power can one finger hold? Are all surfers crazy? In On Tension, we take a hard look at a concept most people would rather ignore, and yet we all rely on to grow. Cutting a wide arc from civil rights leaders to protest art to playing solitaire, we meditate on the value of acknowledging, understanding, and navigating tension, rather than turning away.

What connects new-born puppies, amateur skateboarders, and some of the greatest scientific minds in human history? Why, play, of course. In On Play, we explore the fundamental role playfulness plays in cranial development, curiosity’s ongoing significance in shaping the way we see the world, and how we can all better embody the concept of ubuntu through our actions.
