Neo and her father are inventors. When her dad invents a helicopter hat and flies away, Neo gets bored and decides to make her own invention. However, she makes her invention a little too powerful and almost gets into trouble. Explore 5 Fun Activities to do at Home

Step 1

For this activity, you will need a clear glass or jar filled with water and a pencil or stick.

Step 2

Put the pencil or stick partially in the water and observe that it appears to bend where it meets the water.

Step 3

Fill a basin with water and move your hand or arm around in the water and observe the increased resistance from the water.

Step 4

Explain that the pencil appears to bend as it reaches the water because of the added resistance from the water.  We see the pencil because light is bouncing off of it, but that light slows down as it moves through the water (just like our hand did). This slowing down causes the pencil to appear as if it has bent.

Step 5

Next: Let’s try to make a rainbow. For this activity you’ll need a piece of paper, dark place, flashlight from your phone (or any torch) and glass or jar of water.

Step 6

In a dark room place the clear jar/glass filled with water on top of the white piece of paper. Shine your flashlight from the side at a downward angle so that the light from the flashlight shines onto the white piece of paper.  Keep adjusting your angle and distance from the glass until you find the right spot and see a rainbow appear on the paper. Note: your rainbow will be vertical lines, not the arc shape that we see in the sky.

Step 7

Go outside in the daylight (a sunny day works best).  Rub your hands with soap and water until you create a thick foam of bubbles.

Step 8

Gently open a small space between your hands and blow through it to see the bubbles. Look carefully to see if you can see the rainbow colours!

Step 1

Collect your resources.  For this activity you will need miscellaneous recyclable items and other creative materials such as cardboard, glue, markers or crayons, a piece of paper, scissors, different coloured paint and a paintbrush.

Step 2

Brainstorm your alien’s traits.  What will it look like?  What will it eat?  What adaptations will it have to survive etc.

Step 3

On a piece of paper, draw and design what you would like your own alien to look like. 

Step 4

Use the things you have collected to draw, paint and decorate your alien. 

Step 5

Present your new alien friend!

Plane Designs

Step 1

For this activity you will need to download a copy of the three planes: Harrier plane, Dart plane and Eagle plane. You will also need a piece of paper and crayons/coloured pencils.

Step 2

Depending on the age group of the children, give them a piece of paper and the relevant copy of the downloaded plane.  Either help the kids fold their own plane(s) or fold it for them.

Step 3

Decorate your planes using your crayons or coloured pencils.

Step 4

Once you have decorated your plane(s), take them outside and see how they fly when you throw them into the air. Tell your family and friends which plane flies the best and why.

Pictures to Colour

Step 1

For this activity you will need to download a copy of the Springloaded sequencing activity page. You will also need crayons or coloured pencils and a pair of scissors.

Step 2

Try to copy the pages as they appear in the book or get creative and colour the pages with bright patterns and colours that you like.

Step 3

Cut out the pictures as individual cards. Arrange the cards in the correct order and tell your own story as you describe what is happening in the different cards.

Step 1

For this activity, you will need different coloured crayons or paints, a ruler and a toilet paper roll.

Step 2

Cut out a tubular section of about 7cm wide from a toilet paper roll. Keep cutting along the roll. You will now have the base of your bracelet. Make as many bracelets as you would like.

Step 3

Decorate the bracelets using crayons or paint, let them dry and then put them on. Carry the superhero power!

Discuss the story together:

Discussion questions to ask kids. You don’t have to ask all of them, these are just suggestions. You can also come up with your own questions as well if you like:

  1. What does it mean when something is spring loaded?
  2. What does Neo invent?
  3. Why does Neo make an invention?
  4. How was her invention influenced by her father?
  5. Neo seems bored after her father flies away. How does being bored make her more likely to be creative
  6. Why is creativity important?
  7. Neo’s father kind of abandons her, why do you think he does this? Is he trying to abandon her, or was he busy with other things and distracted? Do you think he wanted Neo to be bummed out? Have you ever made someone else sad without intending to? What happened?
  8. Neo’s invention works so well that it almost gets her into trouble. How?
  9. When Neo realizes that she is floating away, what does she do to fix the problem?
  10. Neo’s father catches her as she falls back to earth. What might have happened to Neo if he hadn’t been there? What does this tell us about the importance of family?
  11. How does the story help us to think about Ubuntu?
  12. Do you think that Neo’s dad is impressed with her invention?
  13. Why do you think that Neo’s father makes his own springloaded shoes? Why do you think he makes them for the cat as well? Why is it important that even the cat is included?
  14. Do Neo’s elbow pads keep her safe?
  15. Do you think science is important?
