The NIVEA Thanda Centre is a safe place where children are free to be themselves and where they can learn, play and explore. It’s home to the only science lab, library, skate park and art centre in the municipality, and it’s powered by solar energy. But most importantly, it’s a place where children and youth in our community can feel at home. To learn more about NIVEA’s partnership with Thanda, please click here.
“To me, Thanda means home.”
– Andiswa, Age 11
“It is a place I go to borrow books that I want to read for myself.”
– Asanda, Age 10
Last year, we had over 4,000 visits to the NIVEA Thanda Centre – and that’s just on holidays and weekends. In 2016, NIVEA’s generous contributions to this space enabled us to build four classrooms for our ECD Programmes and ensured that the Centre can remain open on holidays and weekends so that children always have a place to go that they can call home. We think it’s pretty cool and we hope you do too.
We make sure that our ECD classrooms are filled with love and laughter. Here, the children receive the support they need to learn, grow, and thrive.
Reading is one of our favourite activities. Our library is essential to building literacy skills and confidence among children in our community.
Feel like experimenting? We do! Our Science Lab gives children an opportunity to apply theoretical understanding to real-life experiences.
Origami? Check. Paper mache? You bet. Recycled art? We do that, too. This is the only place in our community for children to let their creativity run wild.
Children barely notice that they’re learning important values like respect and cooperation, while playing on swings or cruising around our skate park.
Our cooks prepare hearty lunches for the children in our ECD and After-school Programmes every school day. That’s about 650 meals, five days, every week.
Our on-site veggie garden gives children an opportunity to learn how to grow their own vegetables – teaching them responsibility and self-reliance.
We like the earth. So we use solar energy to generate power and jojo tanks to collect rainwater. Our biodigester converts waste into cooking fuel.
